The story is about a woman who gets sent a magic book but at first she doesn't know how to read it. While she's trying to figure it out she meets the hero of the story; he is a werewolf and the book belongs to his pack. She gets kidnapped by a rival and eventually escapes only to be recaptured a little later when she gives herself up to save her friend. Truthfully there hasn't been much time where she wasn't being kidnapped for the main characters to have a little romance. It was almost all physical attraction that made them come together. I really got bored with the plot, saying to myself, damn she got caught again and wishing you could fast forward to where the characters meet again. And just when I thought things would be explained CLIFFHANGER! I don't think I will buy the rest of the book. The female character just isn't interesting enough to keep my attention and the pace of the book has been slow. I mean really dragged out. I wanted more than anything to just skip her second kidnapping even though that worked into the story just to get to the end so I could say I finished it.

Lost Library An Urban Fantasy Romance edition by Kate Baray Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

An interesting premise cannot save a book from bad editing and an uneven plot. The author spent 70 pages outlining in in detail how the main character couldn't read this mysterious book, but then spent only 30 pages solving the mystery. It seems like entire chapters were cut, and a lot of loose ends were left dangling. One of the major characters just disappears about 200 pages in, never to be mentioned again. And for a book that proclaims it is not a romance, it sure has a lot of time devoted to discussing the love lives of the Lizzy and Kenna.
I read this whole story and it certainly wasn't a *chore*, but I felt no great urgency to get back to it after each break. For someone who reads a lot of urban fantasy (like me), there's simply nothing special about the writing style, the plot, or the fairly lightweight characters. (She never knew she had magical talent, but now everyone is after her for it! Oh, and it's unusually strong! And that "werewolf" is really quite attractive!) The head baddie has one scary magical trick, and the American packs have some remedial learning and integration to do in later volumes, but nothing feels like it's developed richly and intensely enough.

The shallowest plot element is a trivial one, but as an animal lover, it bugged me Lizzie owns dogs, but I can't tell you any more than that simple fact, because they are never named or even described visually or personality-wise! They are, as I said, a minor plot element, not actual characters. It's always just, "She let the dogs out," "She fed the dogs," "The dogs barked at the wolflike creature outside," "She hoped her poor dogs were all right (while she was kidnapped away)." She could have three purebred Pomeranans, two huge hounds, or a half-dozen assorted mutts, but I don't know! It's frustrating, and hard to believe that she really cares about them when she never interacts with any of them one-on-one at any point in the story! Didn't the author's beta readers ask any questions?

Anyway, this first story is cheap or free, and it does have a resolution of the immediate problem (The bad-guy situation is not completely finished -- but no spoiler-y details here) so you can give it a try, and decide for yourself whether it's worth continuing. FYI, books 1-3 are available in a boxed set, which periodically goes on sale.
I liked the idea of the book and the 'world-building,' when it happened, was pretty good. The thing I didn't like about the book was that the story moved along so so so so slowly; a lot of mundane, everyday things described. I am reading the second book now, and I would say the exact same thing about it; but I did come back for seconds since it was right there. If the second book had not been out, I don't know that I would have come back to this series. And I don't know if I will some back for the third book; the heroine is fairly likable in this first book, not as much in the second book
All in all, I would recommend the book - see for yourself.
